Tips for Handling Picky Eating: A Guide for Parents of Toddlers & Preschoolers
We understand that mealtimes can sometimes feel challenging, especially when dealing with picky eaters. Many toddlers and preschoolers go through a phase where they become selective about what they eat. We’re here to support you with helpful strategies to make these moments a little easier for you and your child.

Here are some tried-and-true tips to encourage healthy eating habits:

  • Picky Eating is a Normal Phase - Most children experience picky eating between the ages of 18 months and 5 years. Remember, it’s just a phase, and with time and patience, your child will outgrow it.
  • Build Good Eating Habits Early On - Instead of stressing about what your child eats, focus on building positive eating habits that will become part of their daily routine. These habits are the foundation for healthier eating as they grow.
  • Offer a Variety of Healthy Foods - Don't hesitate to offer the same healthy options repeatedly. If your child enjoys specific fruits or vegetables, stick with them! The goal is to keep offering a wide range of healthy choices consistently.
  • Keep Mealtimes Relaxed and Pressure free - Avoid applying pressure during meals, such as requiring your child to clean their plate. This can lead to negative associations with mealtime. Instead, focus on creating an enjoyable and stress-free environment at the table.
  • Let Your Child Serve Themselves - Give your child a sense of control by allowing them to plate their own food. You can offer a few kid-friendly options and let them decide what to
take. This can help reduce resistance and increase engagement with their meals.
  • Use Correct Portion Sizes - Serving too much food at once can overwhelm your child. Make sure you’re providing appropriate portion sizes for their age. Smaller portions can make mealtimes more manageable.
  • Be Patient – They Will Try New Foods - Children may resist new foods initially, but with consistency, they will eventually try them. Keep offering new foods alongside familiar favorites, and you may be surprised when they decide to give them a taste!
  • Involve Your Child in Meal Planning - Allowing your child to help decide meals can give them a sense of ownership and encourage them to be more open to trying new things. A food choice board with pictures or drawings of meal options can make this process fun and interactive.

Need More Help? If you're concerned about whether your child is just a selective eater or a true picky eater (clinically defined as eating fewer than 20 foods), we recommend sitting down with your pediatrician to discuss your child’s eating habits.

As childcare providers, we understand that nurturing a child’s emotional intelligence is just as vital as their cognitive and physical growth. Teaching our little ones how to understand, express, and manage their emotions sets the foundation for strong mental health and healthy relationships.
